A Christmas Carol

Merry Christmas, all! With the holidays descending upon us and cookies to be baked (and eaten), gifts to be wrapped, and a general hubbub of busy-ness occupying the calendar, who has time to read?

Why we do, of course! This Christmas’ book cameo comes in the form of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Popularized by many holiday movies and its iconic protagonist, A Christmas Carol is a humorous and thought-provoking Christmas ghost story following the miserly bachelor, Ebenezer Scrooge, as he discovers kindness, mercy, and generosity with the help of three haunting spirits. Dickens surpasses himself once again with his masterful word choices, leaving readers chuckling after only the first page. Children as well as adults will enjoy the short, five-chapter long story as Scrooge moves from his stubborn “Humbug!” to a joyful and thankful “Merry Christmas”.

Whether reading out loud as a family, listening to the audiobook in the car, or settling down to read with a hard copy, I highly recommend A Christmas Carol for your Christmas reading entertainment.

Curious about screen adaptations of the story? My siblings and I grew up watching A Muppet Christmas Carol, and from the versions of the story I have seen, I have to say it is startlingly true to the book. Another recent movie starring Dan Stevens that adults would enjoy is The Man Who Invented Christmas, a humorous, heartfelt, and insightful depiction of the author, Charles Dickens, and his struggles while writing A Christmas Carol.
