One of the greatest joys of reading is stumbling across a new book that instantly joins the shelf of favorites.
The Amazing Interlude by Mary Roberts Rhinehart is most definitely one of these. I first read The Amazing Interlude about a year ago, and since then have been joined by a half dozen others of my family members who have also added it to their shelf of favorites.
Published in 1918 before the end of World War I, the story follows a young American girl who dreams of opening a soup kitchen on the front lines in Belgium. Although engaged to a stolid, stable young man in Pennsylvania, Sara Lee Kennedy hears the cry of the suffering soldiers and sets sail for England, to the outrage of her fiancé and aunt. The stage is set, and Sara Lee starts a journey that challenges both her courage and her resolve. New friendships, narrow escapes and an earnest endeavor to both fund and run a small soup kitchen on the front lines in Belgium capture the reader in a net of heroism, mystery, and love.
While experiencing an amazing book for the first time may become a rarer occurrence the more books we have under our belt, The Amazing Interlude is just as good the second time through and continues to bring both laughter and tears to our home. In search of a truly inspiring and captivating read? Look no further. Join Sara Lee in her mission to serve the hungry and wounded fighting to save their country and homes in the war to end all wars.
